Britt Robertson

Philosophy 101: "I look for elements that offer me a new experience," she says of her eclectic résumé.
HerTube: This fall Britt stars in the Disney Channel's Avalon High: (a contemporary twist on the Arthurian legend) and will return as Lux on the second season of the CW's Life Unexpected. Next she'll appear alongside Christina Hendricks and Max Thieriot in the indie drama The Family Tree.

A Year Abroad: Filming Avalon High in New Zealand last spring wasn't all business. "It's the adventure capital of the world! I went shark diving and even jumped off a bridge," she says. "So that was pretty cool." —TOMMY WESELY

Brie Larson

Age: 20
Hometown:Sacramento, California
New Medium: After appearing in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Brie spent her summer onstage in the Williamstown Theater Festival's production of Our Town.
On Television: "We work intensely for three months, come back a year later, and remember where we left off," she says of playing Kate on United States of Tara. "It's amazing."

Kodi Smit-McPhee

Age: 14
Hometown: Melbourne, Australia
Family Affair: Kodi's eighteen-year-old sister, Sianoa, is a cast member on HBO's Hung.
But Groove Is in His Heart: Offscreen, guitarist Kodi spends time with his yet-to-be-named band. "I want to have an eighties kind of name, like 'I-Kandy,'" he says. "That'd be cool."
Dark Materials: In 2009 he played Viggo Mortensen's son in the gritty drama The Road, and next he'll star as a lonely preteen who befriends his vampire neighbor (Chloë Grace Moretz) in this month's Let Me In.

Jennifer Lawrence

Age: 19
Hometown: Louisville, Kentucky
Why Now: Her role in the gritty indie Winter's Bone is already generating Oscar buzz—not that she wants to hear about it. "It's unbelievable. I'm trying not to pay attention. How do you deal with something like that?"
Future Perfect: She'll appear in the upcoming black comedy The Beaver; the romantic drama Like Crazy; and the X-Men prequel, for which she'll endure hours of makeup to play shape-shifting mutant Mystique. "We're deciding what color the lips should be," she says. "I vote pink. If they're blue, they make my teeth so white that when I smile, I look insane." —LAUREN WATERMAN

Tyler Posey

Age: 18
Hometown: Santa Clarita, California
Don't Call Him Shy: The star of the new MTV series Teen Wolf has no problem seeing himself on-screen. "I watch the pilot, like, every day," he says. "I love it—I'm so proud of it."
The Twilight Hour: A few years back, he very narrowly missed out on playing a different heartthrob. "It was between me and Taylor Lautner for the role of Jacob Black," he explains. "I haven't seen it yet, but I don't have anything against it. In the end, I'm still a werewolf." —L.W.

Ella Purnell

She isn't sure . . . when she decided to be an actress: "Five or six," she guesses. "I was small."
A Dramatic Entrance: After debuting in the West End revival of Oliver!, Ella is set to appear in three films: a big-screen adaptation of the book Ways to Live Forever, the thriller Intruders (opposite Clive Owen), and this fall's Never Let Me Go (as a young Keira Knightley).
Going Method: "We had bonding sessions before the shoot," Ella explains. "I didn't know it, but Keira was picking up on my mannerisms. In the movie, she does things that I didn't know I did. It's really, really clever." —L.W.

Keir Gilchrist

Age: 17 
Hometown: Toronto, Canada
Head Case: Keir's new film, this fall's It's Kind of a Funny Story, covered familiar territory: His role as Craig, a depressed young man who checks himself into a psychiatric unit, wasn't a far cry from his day job. On Showtime's United States of Tara, he plays the son of multiple-personalitied Toni Collette.
In Good Company: Funnyman Zach Galifianakis stars as Craig's wingman in the film and only adds to an impressive cast (including Emma Roberts). Keir has been a fan of his comedic costar forever: "He's pretty-hilarious-slash-really-hilarious."
Home Sweet Home: "Shooting in Brooklyn was amazing, but it's expensive," he explains. "Toronto is a little bit more laid-back." —S.J.D.

Lily Collins

It's Not Easy Being Green: After tons of auditions, Lily was "determined to be the right girl for the job," she says of her film debut in The Blind Side:.
Up Next: Lily will star in thrillers Priest and Abduction (opposite Taylor Lautner). "Taylor is so down-to-earth," she says. "He signs autographs at 5:30 a.m. for fans who've been waiting ten hours."
Family Ties: Being the daughter of rocker Phil Collins isn't a free pass: "In the end, a name is just a name. It can get you through the door, but you need something to back it up." —ANDREW BEVAN

And the Award Goes to . . . She edged out hundreds to win the prestigious Australians in Film Heath Ledger Scholarship: "I thought it was a long shot but worth the try."
War and Peace:
With a starring role in the epic drama Beneath Hill 60 alongside Harrison Gilbertson, this down-to-earth newcomer is enjoying every bit of her success. "If someone told me last year that I'd be living in L.A. and auditioning, I wouldn't have believed them." But now, she explains, "I'm up for any challenge." —T.W.

Logan Lerman

Hero Worship: His mad skills as the lead of Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief so impressed director Paul W. S. Anderson that Logan was cast sans audition as swordsman D'Artagnan in The Three Musketeers 3-D reboot. He insists it's a stretch: "I'm used to playing more of the nerd."
On the Perks of Being a Wallflower: He'll soon play a loner opposite Emma Watson in her first big-screen appearance since Harry Potter.
Movies 101: Logan hopes to direct and score his own films one day, but for now he's putting college on hold. "Being on set is the best film school there is." —ALISON S. COHN

Hailee Steinfeld

The Golden Ticket: Hailee beat out more than 15,000 actresses for her part in the Coen brothers' remake of the classic Western True Grit. In the film, she plays opposite a gang of award-winning actors (including Matt Damon and Jeff Bridges) as a vengeful orphan bent on tracking her dad's murderer.
Lucky? You Bet: "Jeff has a game called Pass the Pigs—you roll these teeny plastic pigs and get points based on how they land. Everyone got so intense about it that you'd think they were playing for money." —L.W.

How He Got His Start: "My dad is an opera singer," Harrison explains. "So when I said I wanted to act, he didn't laugh; he was very supportive."
Up Next: He'll soon make his American debut in What's Wrong with Virginia alongside Ed Harris, Emma Roberts, and Jennifer Connelly. "She plays my mother, but she's psychologically disturbed, so it's more like a brother-sister relationship. My character's goal is to look after his mum." —L.W.

Max Thieriot

Hometown: Los Altos, California
Freak Show: Although he's not a horror-movie buff, Max seems to be mastering the genre in this month's new Wes Craven slasher, My Soul to Take, and the upcoming psychological thriller House at the End of the Street with Jennifer Lawrence.
Ch-ch-ch-changes: A family-film veteran, the star of Nancy Drew and Catch that Kid is finally ready for the more mature audience he began cultivating with this year's twisted drama Chloe: "I don't know how many of the kids who watched my old stuff will continue to watch what I do now."

Little Drummer Boy: At thirteen, he stole the screen from Liam Neeson and Hugh Grant (his distant cousin)—and the hearts of audiences—to get the girl in Love Actually.
Let It Be: This month Thomas kills it as a young Paul McCartney in the John Lennon biopic Nowhere Boy.
So You Wanna Be a Rock 'n' Roll Star? As the Beatles' famous lefty, he hits all the right notes—literally: Thomas has been filling in on bass for his mum's art-pop act, Winnet. "It gives me a different sense of performing," he says. "I'm always sitting in the back, which I find quite nice." —A.S.C.

Nicola Peltz

Because I Said So! When she set her sights on acting, her mother reacted with a firm "absolutely not!" Luckily for Nicola, who has seven siblings, the pleas paid off: "Mom thought it was just a phase, but she's supportive now."
Theater Geek: After appearing off-Broadway in the drama Blackbird, she landed a lead role in M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender and will next star opposite Rob Pattinson in Unbound Captives.
